Learn what to look for when buying an astronaut ashtray: material quality, size, stability, and design details. This guide helps you choose a space-themed ashtray that fits your decor and daily use.
Quick answer
Focus on material durability, size, and stability when choosing an astronaut ashtray. A resin construction offers a good balance of detail and weight for everyday use.
Material quality and durability
Resin is the most common material for novelty ashtrays like the Astronaut Ashtray. It allows detailed sculpting and can be finished with a smooth, easy-to-clean surface. However, resin can be brittle if dropped, so check for a solid, thick build rather than a hollow one.
Size and capacity
Consider how many people will use the ashtray. A single-saucer design works for one or two smokers, while a larger bowl holds more ash and reduces emptying frequency. The Astronaut Ashtray is a single-piece design, so it suits personal use or a small group.
Stability and safety
A wide, flat base prevents tipping. Look for an ashtray that sits level on your table or desk. The Astronaut Ashtray's astronaut figure adds visual interest but should not compromise the base's stability. Place it on a non-slip mat if the surface is slippery.
Decision rules for choosing an astronaut ashtray
- Material check: Resin is common for novelty ashtrays. Ensure it is solid, not hollow, to avoid cracking. Avoid painted surfaces that may chip with heat.
- Size fit: Measure your intended spot. A ashtray that is too small fills quickly; one too large may crowd a desk. The Astronaut Ashtray is a compact single-saucer design. Check dimensions before buying.
- Stability test: Place the ashtray on a flat surface. It should not rock or wobble. A weighted base helps prevent accidental spills.
- Cleaning ease: Smooth, non-porous surfaces wipe clean easily. Avoid crevices that trap ash. Resin can be wiped with a damp cloth; do not soak. Regular cleaning prevents odor buildup.
