Newton's Cradle Not Swinging? Simple Fixes Guide

Quick Answer

Check the strings for tangles, ensure the balls are aligned, and adjust the base so it sits level. Most issues are simple to fix without tools.

Diagnosis Steps for a Stalled Newton's Cradle

• Symptom: Balls stop swinging quickly or only one side moves.
• Likely Cause: Strings are tangled or twisted. Over time, the strings can twist from repeated use, causing friction that slows the balls. Check for visible tangles or twists in the strings near the top bar.
• Corrective Action: Gently untwist each string by rotating the ball until the string hangs straight. If tangled, carefully separate the strings using your fingers or a toothpick. After untwisting, test the swing. If still slow, move to the next step.
• Symptom: Balls hit each other unevenly or make a dull thud instead of a crisp click.
• Likely Cause: Balls are misaligned. They should rest in a perfect line, touching each other lightly. Look from the side to see if any ball sits forward or backward.
• Corrective Action: Hold the top bar steady and gently slide each ball sideways until they align. Adjust the string knots at the top bar if needed to center each ball. Test again. If the sound is still dull, check the base.
• Symptom: The pendulum leans to one side or rocks when you tap it.

Product Fact

• Newton's Pendulum Sphere: The Newton Sphere Pendulum is a functional perpetual balance that teaches physics principles. When working correctly, it demonstrates conservation of momentum. Fixing common issues ensures you get the full educational and decorative value.
